“Jen Shah, star of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, has been sentenced to prison for her role in a telemarketing scheme that defrauded hundreds of victims out of millions of dollars. Shah and her assistant, Stuart Smith, were charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering in March 2021.
According to the indictment, Shah and Smith operated a series of companies that marketed “lead lists” to other individuals and businesses, promising access to potential customers for a fee. In reality, the lists were largely comprised of people who had previously expressed no interest in the products being offered, and many of the victims were elderly or otherwise vulnerable.
Shah and Smith allegedly used high-pressure tactics and false promises to convince their victims to hand over their credit card information and make payments, and then used that information to charge them for unnecessary or unwanted services. On Wednesday, Shah was sentenced to five years in prison and ordered to pay $5.5 million in restitution. Smith was sentenced to three years in prison and ordered to pay $1.5 million in restitution.
The case against Shah and Smith was the result of a joint investigation by the FBI and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. In a statement, U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss praised the efforts of law enforcement and said that the defendants’ sentences should serve as a warning to others who might consider engaging in similar schemes.
‘Jennifer Shah and Stuart Smith orchestrated a telemarketing scheme that defrauded hundreds of victims, many of whom were elderly, out of millions of dollars,’ Strauss said. ‘Today’s sentences should serve as a warning to other fraudsters that we will hold them accountable for their crimes and seek to bring them to justice.’
Shah has not commented on her sentence, but her attorney has said that they plan to appeal the ruling. The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City is currently in its second season on Bravo.”
